About Saltash, United Kingdom
Saltash is a town in Cornwall, England in the UK. Saltash is also known as "The gateway to Cornwall" and the meaning of its name is said to be "the ash tree by the salt mill". Saltash lies by the river Tamar, is close to Plymouth and Devon. Saltash is home to many old, historic buildings and attractions, one of the most important landmarks is the famous "Royal Albert Bridge" which was built by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was completed on May 2nd 1859. The town has established a heritage trail of which the community is extremely proud as it highlights the old buildings and important landmarks. The heritage trail of Saltash begins at the museum, leads to the old grocery store ‘Elliott’s store’, then past the Guildhall as well the churches of St Nicholas and St Faith, further it passes the old railway station and Mary Newman's cottage who was the wife of Sir Francis Drake. Other important sites in Saltash are the Union Inn with its murals, the Townbright Mosaic and of course the Statue of Brunel, who was the engineer for one of the most amazing bridges, the local Royal Albert Bridge. Should you prefer to take a break from sightseeing, then enjoy the shopping malls which offer everything the heart desires. The many annual festivals celebrated in Saltash feature lots of music, arts and entertainment and naturally the numerous rowing events and competitions on the Tamar river.
